Emanuel Pleitez joined thousands to march in the streets of downtown Los Angeles today in support of immigrant rights and in celebration of organized labor and May Day. The air was infused with persistent optimism as marchers rallied around the well known call of “Si se puede!” and the newer chant, “Obama escucha, estamos en la lucha!”
Emanuel joined the march right after appearing on CNN en Espanol to speak in favor of comprehensive immigration reform and a path to citizenship for all immigrants. At the march, members of numerous labor groups and immigrant organizations gathered at the Broadway and Olympic Boulevard and kicked off the march with live music and speeches to rally the crowd. Emanuel spoke to numerous participants and members of the media about his personal story as the son of an immigrant who came to the Unites States to give her children a better life.
Emanuel had the chance to talk with educators and students about the DREAM Act, which would help undocumented young people get a legal status so they can apply for federal aid to go to college. He also had the opportunity to hear from workers about their struggles during the recession.
When the march got underway, Emanuel lead the way along with immigrant rights activists like Juan Jose Gutierrez, director of Movimientos Latinos USA.
