Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and her SB 1070 supporters claim to have worked tirelessly for months to produce the bill Gov. Brewer signed into law on April 30. And yet, a mere seven days after signing this bill into law, SB 1070 supporters were forced to come back and fix their broken bill!

Support_MALDEF.jpg The “fixes” fail to address the unconstitutional intrusion into federal immigration regulation. The “fixes” also fail to specify measures to prevent the unscrupulous racial profiling of Arizona residents and visitors. Rather, the “fixes” grant legal cover for discrimination, creating a pretext to provide legitimacy for detentions and arrests based on any alleged, minor, technical violation.

SB 1070 creates a new state crime for failure to carry proof of status. Rather than protecting and serving Arizona communities, SB 1070 would compel police officers to ostracize those most in need of protection, like victims and witnesses of crimes. The amendments are no more than a cynical manipulation of the legislative process.

SB 1070 is a costly distraction from the real immigration reform needed in this country. MALDEF will continue to fight against SB 1070 and other unlawful weapons used to target civil and human rights. With your support, MALDEF will help strike down SB 1070 as an unscrupulous, un-American, and unconstitutional violation of civil and human rights.

Sincerely,
