Councilman and mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti released a new television commercial called “Potential.” In the TV ad, the narrator claims Councilman Garcetti has a proven history of solving problems and leading the city of Los Angeles.
“Potential” came out the day after an LA Weekly article covered Councilman Garcetti’s violation of the Fair Political Practices Commission Regulation.
Councilman Garcetti, who was City Council president at the time, voted to give Clear Channel Outdoor exclusive rights to digital billboards in LA. At the time of the vote, Councilman Garcetti owned 200 shares of stock of Clear Channel, valued between $2,000 and $10,000. He also did not seek the advice of the city attorney.
The day before City Council voted on the digital billboards matter, Councilman Garcetti accepted a maxed- out donation from Clear Channel towards his office holder account.
City Hall has created a culture that hurts this city and its residents. Politicians that have led LA over the past decade seem to care about the people and community only when election time rolls around. After the polls close, their priorities seem to shift towards entities with deeper pockets.
Los Angeles has too much potential to continue down the path of financial mismanagement, poor decision-making, and questionable practices. It’s time for a real leader to be given an opportunity, since our last set of leaders have proven to be incapable of making the right decisions. A $238 million deficit, 50% graduation rates, and the highest unemployment rate of any major city show the potential damage the same leadership can have.
